Free-wheeling discovery
Discovery brings me joy. Experimentation brings me joy. I have labored long and joylessly to grow as a representational artist. It's not me. Representational abstraction, yes. But not the kind of realism I sought to achieve for so many years. The result was to beat myself up as a failure. To embrace the impostor syndrome.
All I needed to do was to let go.
So I have. Am I making successful paintings? Sometimes. Masterpieces? Hardly. But I am reconnecting with the sort of expressive creativity I've always admired in others' works. It takes hard work, and not a little bit of courage, to reveal who you are in the paintings you create. It requires trust and the grownup ability not to care what others think.
It requires you to keep on truckin' - for better or worse.
