looking back, looking forward

I spent some time painting yesterday and found some monoprints, like this one, that i had done almost 30 years ago. It's on cheap paper, because, after all, it was just an experiment. But that's exactly what i'm doing now: Exploring, experimenting, hoping this adventure will lead to growth as an artist and a better understanding of who I am. Who I've become.
Over the years I've allowed myself to tighten up, to try to control the image on my canvas instead of allowing it to find its own way. Allowing it to move freely and in unintended directions. The results have been mixed, as you might expect. But each effort served up a bit of intelligence, and provided new, endless avenues to explore.
"This is why courage is required to create. You have to let go of certainty, to search far away from the lamppost, to trade static certainty for the dynamic of the unknown." - Nancy Hillis
